The Blackpool City Council announced a total loss of life and injured over a hundred people on Wednesday evening.
“The number of people affected is a fraction of the number of victims.
We are in shock and we are devastated,” a spokesperson for the Blackpool Council told Al Jazeera.
An official statement from the centre confirmed that two people died, while a third person, who was in a serious condition, was reported dead.
In total, the centre said, the number has risen to seven people.
A spokesperson for police confirmed that three people were injured.
The spokesman said: “We have received information that two men have died and that the other two have been admitted to hospital.”
The spokesperson said the dead included the victims of the gas explosion.
The spokesperson declined to give further details.
The Blackpoles centre said that the injured were being taken to hospital, while four people were taken to a trauma centre.
A number of children were also treated at the centre, but the spokesperson said there was no information about the age of the children or how many.
Al Jazeera’s Daniel Leal-Olivas, reporting from the Blackpools community centre, said: “This is a very sad event, and it’s heartbreaking for the community and for the family.”
We’re just a small place in a small community and we’ve been overwhelmed by the loss of our friends, our neighbours, our colleagues.
We are just really saddened and devastated and we want to send our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy.
“The Blackburn Street area is popular with tourists, and Blackpool Town Hall said it would work with local businesses to assist local businesses.
The UK government has declared a public health emergency, and the Department of Environment and Rural Development has also called for all schools to be closed until further notice.
In a statement, Blackpool Mayor Andrew Jones said: “This tragic incident is a devastating reminder of the risk of living in a densely populated and congested urban area.”
He said the city had a very high suicide rate and a high number of homicides.
Jones added: We are working with the UK government and the local authorities to ensure that our residents, businesses and the public are protected in the wake of this tragedy.”
This incident is not unique to Blackpool, we have experienced a number of similar events in the last few years and we will continue to work closely with the local community to mitigate the impacts of this incident.
“Police have confirmed that no one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.
Blackpool City Councillor Andy Wilson said:”This has been a devastating tragedy for our community.
We know that the Blacktown community will be a little bit of a grieving process as this unfolds.
“We are going to be working with all our local businesses and all our businesses in the town centre to assist businesses to deal with the immediate impact of this tragic incident and to provide support to businesses and their staff, who are now facing the risk that we have seen here.”
I want to thank all the local businesses for all the support that they have provided to the local Blackpool community.
“We’ve been working closely with Blackpool council, the Blackburn Borough Council, the UK Government and the police in the lead up to this incident to offer support and help.
We want to give them the support and support they need, but also know that we are also going to take care of Blackpool’s residents, particularly those in the Blackwood area, to make sure that this tragic event is not repeated.
We will continue working with Blackburn council to provide assistance, and will continue looking for all potential witnesses and witnesses that may have witnessed this incident.
Blackpool will be in touch with the police once all of the details have been worked out.
